Well I am back on point with some gorgeous new performances to share. Speaking of gorgeous, have you ever seen Aranya? As I watched this band, I remember a euphoric excitement coming over me, an ecstatic joy. It was probably a combination of the music, the burning of incense or tree resin, and the candle(s), but more than likely, the presence of the singer and viola player, Uta, who, though exceptionally beautiful, as well as talented, is wielding something far more astounding than either. A personal surefootedness, and and self awareness uncommon amongst musicians. It is like she is pouring a cup of bright light into the room that scrubs each and every soul until it is clean. Beneath it's dark exterior, Aranya is full of love and light, and brings me back to many a moonlit night, dancing naked under the stars as trios of healers sing with birdlike voices in praise of the elements.

4/17/10 Jeremy Clemens - guitar, Jake Pebbles - drums. Competing from Sacramento. A beautiful kicking for your rock-n-roll butt. I love listening to this band. To make this fit on here, i had to chop out all the clapping between songs, which may give the impression of one long song. Tight band that sometimes loosens up, but in a very tight way, making it that much tighter.

4/3/10 I am not sure if i have all the personnel correct on this. Here's what I have. Jeff Brown, Michael Hendrickson, Marisa Anderson, Daphna Kohn, Christine Denkenwalter, Jessie Johnson, Alicia Rogers, and Scott DeMay. It was their last show, as Jeff is moving to Los Angeles. My tape was a little faulty, and you can hear it at the end of side one and the beginning of side two. Other than that, I love this recording.

4/7/10 Jeff Holt guitar, accordion, bass and vocals, Grayson White - violin and vocals, Kris White - guitar, bass and vocals, still trying to figure out who the drummer was. this band is one of the hardest bands to classify. they are a little bit of everything. the stuff gets stuck in my head in a good way. there was also a guest rapper who had a gigantic boombox. i am really impressed by this band. they are weird, but good enough musicians that you can't really question it. there's even a split second of disco, which i love.

Where elso can you see an incredible show and catch up on your grocery shopping at the same time? Cherry Sprout Produce on Albina between Killingsworth and Alberta. I had put my mics on overturned grocery baskets, one of which was used by the afore mentioned guest vocalist as an anchor for his hands as he knelt in front of the band, sticking his butt out boldly and wagging it to the beat of the drums. If drum circles were like this, I would probably go to them.

Daniel Morris - bass, vocals, Justin Stimson (bffl) - drums, vocals, Dan O'Hara - guitar, Ezra Reece - violin, keyboard, and vocals, Becki Wolff - sat onstage and drew a beautiful picture which i later framed and is on my wall. maybe soon i will add a photo of it to this post. anyhoo, this is a dope recording with crazy vocals all over it. even the violin became a vocal mic at some point in this very short and concise performance

HYLAND ISLAND the compound

this band is probably named Tatanka, but possibly something else. Joey Hyland - guitar, Andrew Joseph Weaver - bass, David Ross Zeidman - drums, Pete Bryant - saxaphone, and Ezra Reece - keyboard and percussion. Carson Mcwhirter played first with a solo guitar set (3 people in this band were also in Everybody). Some of you may know that this music has been in the works for about a year and has been kept pretty much under wraps. here is the moment we've all been anticipating; the unveiling of the masterpiece, i don't mind saying.

WHAT'S UP / CRUISER Alberta Street

It was the last Thursday of June, and the pavement of Alberta street was blanketed by the feet of countless people, all together for this once a month gathering that takes place each last Thursday during the warm season on Alberta. The street was lined with street musicians and artists selling their works. Suddenly, in the middle of the street an electric band had set up. Two electric bands. What's up? and Cruiser. Soon a very diverse crowd had assembled around the bands as they played a very brief set, expecting at any time to be asked to stop by local police. Robby, Teddy, and Brian (What's Up?) started the set, and alternated with Dave and Andy (Cruiser), mostly two songs for two songs. This was devised as sort of a safety net in case the show were to get cut short since there was a new rule of no amplified music outdoors, and ensured both bands would get to play. I had the mics too hot at first, so the recording begins blown out, but cleans up shortly after. This is one of my favorite recordings.

If you want tons of people at your show, share a bill with this band. They roll deep. You might even call them "Here Comes a Big-Ass Crowd". Travis, Nick, Soo, Dain, and Sauce on this recording, I believe. It was the heat of late summer and everyone was sweating in this tiny, unventilated chasm of a basement. .Being situated a mere block or so from Javier's Tacqueria was the reward, and everyone cashed in. After the show, Javier's was as packed as the show was. They should have given the band free tacos.

TINY KNIVES The Salad House

This band. All female. It's like a trip to outer space propelled by a rocket that has been shoved up your ass. Jai from our last post (POP ) is the Singer/guitarist. She is also turning out to be the new great matriarch of rock in Portland. On bass, probably the cutest girl ever, Ursula. Seriously, i can only talk to her for about 30 seconds before i have to run away for fear of fainting and thus embarassing myself. The drummer, I have only met a couple times, she is tougher than goat shit, but as nice as a meadow in may. Her name is Jamey (Vonneguts). This band fills the void left in me ever since Team Dresch stopped performing. That is a very high compliment. Recorded at 'gator sausage' Kevin's birthday party. What a wild party it was.

Chelsea, Dane, Joel, Jai, & Shirt. This was in August of '09, Chelsea's farewell performance before she left town. I can describe this band for you in one word. Authentic. if i were to use two words, they would be "ass kickin'". the first time i saw this band, everyone was in costume, there was a bullhorn, a big flag, all kinds of weirdness. At this show and others around this time period, there was no bullhorn, Chelsea had a mic, and costuming was minimal, but every detail was loud and clear. it was a pure stomping of my ass, and ears. so hear you go, download this next time you need your ass whooped by real, authentic punk rock.

MARQ KAYLOR Salad House

Enough about me, lets talk about Mr. Marq Kaylor (CexFucx, Thee Oregon Artificial Limb Co., Cells, Au, Rubella, Bunny, solo, Kinetic Harpoon, Htoo Trio, Ghost to Falco, Portland Bike Ensemble, etc etc) booked here as Hammer of Hathor, but Heather Vergotis was not able to play that night, so it ended up a solo performance. a mono recording. The pitch was not in the proper position, so the actual tape plays slow at normal speed, but I did my best to pitch it to what i remember based on the ride cymbal. I love his style. Not a lot of flash or pummeling rock tricks, just good sounds and lots of control. no flailing going on here. very disciplined and deliberate, building piece by piece, starting with one drum, and eventually revealing the full kit after much teasing. I haven't found this with most musicians, but he could hit one drum once, and if i were blindfolded, I would know from that one sound that it was him. That is exactly how distinct his style is.

10-30-09. Pretty much THE sketchiest show ever! The recording definitely matches. the power to the tape recorder was cut several times during the show, so all we have now are bits and peices, but it is worth it for the experience. I figure I have embarrassed other artists in some of these posts by uploading entire performances, mess-ups and all. Just to be fair, I suppose i shall have to embarrass myself too. that drunk guy singing on the last song is me. David Zeidman (cruiser) along with Mike Krochta (girls on da side) and Ryan (Dollar Menu) on this recording.

CARSON McWHIRTER Dunes

Carson at Dunes. 12 -16-09. Tape ran out on the last song. Oh well, I guess the end of this show was only to be experienced by those present. This guy and Joey Hyland have been truly an inspiration. So much intention goes into the stuff they do. What Carson does on the surface seems very drony, but if you are paying attention, you will find that this is totally composed, with phrases returning and with perplexing loops and contrapuntal rhythms. ok i'm done.

MONTAUK The Know

For a long time this was my favoritest band. Skyler Stimson, Sharon Ermlich, J.B. Holland, and Mike Donnely. This was I Think '07, but i'm not sure. This is a sketch recording, but if you have seen this band, you know that this is a great show, with all the heart grabbing melodies you would expect from a Montauk show, and of course, inaudible vocals. You can hear people saying "I can't hear the vocals," and Skyler saying "good, you didn't want to, trust me."

GIRLS ON DA SIDE Sumner Love

Ah, the fun continues. GirlsOnDaSide. I love these guys. Let's just call this progressive reggae for lack of a better term. You might think you are on the sandy beach of a tropical island with gorgeous girls in bikinis dancing to the beat of a calypso band, when suddenly a feirce wind picks up and dark clouds form overhead as ice cold pellets of freezing rain begin to fall, stinging the skin. Then, without warning, you are thrown into the back seat of a Nash Rambler and driven over the rolling hills of a countryside to a house, where you are tied to a chair and forced to watch a series of short films, mostly clay-mation, an episode of woody woodpecker, and a weezer video. After all that, just as the needle is dropped onto the 4th Led Zeppelin LP, you wriggle your arms free and bolt out the door, running as if pursued by a hungry cat. You run until your legs can no longer move, and then collapse face down on the sandy beach of a tropical island while two bikini girls look down at you and start to giggle.

CRUISER Green House

6-22-09. David Zeidman and Andy Weaver (Everybody etc.) load in to a dank basement, and squeeze their equipment into a corner. the headlining act wanted to cut to the quick, so they played before Cruiser and Why I Must Be Careful, and not only played an epic 45 minute set, but continued to engage in an ongoing free jam. you can hear them in the recording as Dave and Andy launch into their set. it is not long until they achieve absolute command of the party. Dave dropped a stick in one song, or maybe two, but they way he plays it off makes it all the more amazing. let's see.

a very short set from Asss. two floor toms, a cymbal, some pedals and microphones seem to be their entire setup. wild, tribal beats and chanting over the top of an ocean of sludgy ambience. i don't know these guys very well at all, but i am certainly down with their shit. Alex Smith & Sean Sumler are their names and they have rad merch on their myspace.

here is Afternoon Brother again, same set as Someday's, but at a house party. the tape i used was pretty jacked (i had run out of unused tapes), but only in sections, and weirdly, seems to get crunchy in all the right places. these songs are so good, i felt it necessary to post both of the nearly identical shows played by Afternoon Brother. now we have +CNCTD. Tony Schatz (Sounds Like Fun, Rainbow Kittens With Wings, Mr. Frederick, Everybody) has his charming way of wooing his audience with his sexy movements, jingling chimes, and his catchy, memorable progressions. when i have seen him before, he had always used a loop pedal to simulate some kind of distorted choir of voices and guitars. this time there were no loops, only a soft delay. he will tell you most of his sound is from the tiny amp he plays through, but my favorite thing is when his acoustc voice overpowers the volume of the amp in loud parts. there is this joke that maybe there should be lyrics behind him with a bouncy ball. listen to this recording to find out why.

CHANT-OH'S Sumner Love

Zac Nelson again (whose your favorite son, god?, princess sweepstakes, prints, hexlove, trawler bycatch, chll pll, i am the arm, death worth living, falouah do you want me to keep going?) and Carson McWhirter (ent, airplane huh, everybody, holy smokes, hella, the advantage-i have had enough of band name listing, but there are many others) Carson i think practices more than anyone i know. 9 out of 10 times i pass his house, i can hear crazy musical notes drifting into the street. Zac is what i call a solid drummer, very attracted to chunky, precise, and slightly minimal but heavy beats, here is playing quite freely and ranging from light texturing to full speed craziness. one of my favorite things about this show is that it was set in Carson's bedroom with most of the audience either on his bed or right outside his window. my other favorite thing is that the electric organ lost connection with it's amplifier, revealing for a moment, the naked sound of the instrument.

Daniel Trudeau and Michael Saalman in this performance. tight bros, these two are. Michael was in our last post as well, but here we have something distinctly different. a laptop, loop pedals, two guitars, vocals, and random other things that lay strewn about on the stage floor. i think the first cd's these two gave me years ago had ponderosa pine needles taped to an envelope which appeared to be made of green sweat pants and wire. now Daniel has a record on KDVS and you should get it, it is beautiful and the words he put in there resonate with me a great deal.

AFTERNOON BROTHER someday lounge

this band is good. really really good. if you're lucky, you may get a free drum lesson to boot. at this particular show the lesson was how to smooth out your roll (by practicing on a pillow) hosted by Jon Bafus (sholi, mucky the ducky). two guitars played by Michael Saalman (woman year, cozy), and Erik Woodard (los weeblos?, who's your favorite son, god?). these guys are all supershredders, but they reserve it very well in this recording, allowing minimal drones and sparse improv to texture a set of complex rhythms and melodies. hopefully these songs will make it to a vinyl record, but for now, check out this show.

hell of stoopid

welcome, i have no idea how much time i spend doing this shit. i guess it's my calling to make these skeez recordings. this blog will be dedicated to cassette recordings of sick bands playing live. there will probably be other oddities as well. these cassettes are the source material for the compilation tapes i will be releasing shortly. my goal with this is to document these performances of what i consider to be great forward advances in the evolution of music. the equipment used includes 1 vestax mr300, 1 alesis compressor (used as a linear power booster), and 2 sure 545's. the digital conversion is with a 1/8" stereo mini plug into the back of an old compaq pc. once on the computer, i do nothing to them. they are wav files, not mp3. look. i think you should enjoy this free service, but buy me a bottle of red wine, and if you like these artists, find them and buy their records. word!
