MARQ KAYLOR Salad House

Enough about me, lets talk about Mr. Marq Kaylor (CexFucx, Thee Oregon Artificial Limb Co., Cells, Au, Rubella, Bunny, solo, Kinetic Harpoon, Htoo Trio, Ghost to Falco, Portland Bike Ensemble, etc etc) booked here as Hammer of Hathor, but Heather Vergotis was not able to play that night, so it ended up a solo performance. a mono recording. The pitch was not in the proper position, so the actual tape plays slow at normal speed, but I did my best to pitch it to what i remember based on the ride cymbal. I love his style. Not a lot of flash or pummeling rock tricks, just good sounds and lots of control. no flailing going on here. very disciplined and deliberate, building piece by piece, starting with one drum, and eventually revealing the full kit after much teasing. I haven't found this with most musicians, but he could hit one drum once, and if i were blindfolded, I would know from that one sound that it was him. That is exactly how distinct his style is.

BOOZER Punx Palace

10-30-09. Pretty much THE sketchiest show ever! The recording definitely matches. the power to the tape recorder was cut several times during the show, so all we have now are bits and peices, but it is worth it for the experience. I figure I have embarrassed other artists in some of these posts by uploading entire performances, mess-ups and all. Just to be fair, I suppose i shall have to embarrass myself too. that drunk guy singing on the last song is me. David Zeidman (cruiser) along with Mike Krochta (girls on da side) and Ryan (Dollar Menu) on this recording.

CARSON McWHIRTER Dunes

Carson at Dunes. 12 -16-09. Tape ran out on the last song. Oh well, I guess the end of this show was only to be experienced by those present. This guy and Joey Hyland have been truly an inspiration. So much intention goes into the stuff they do. What Carson does on the surface seems very drony, but if you are paying attention, you will find that this is totally composed, with phrases returning and with perplexing loops and contrapuntal rhythms. ok i'm done.

MONTAUK The Know

For a long time this was my favoritest band. Skyler Stimson, Sharon Ermlich, J.B. Holland, and Mike Donnely. This was I Think '07, but i'm not sure. This is a sketch recording, but if you have seen this band, you know that this is a great show, with all the heart grabbing melodies you would expect from a Montauk show, and of course, inaudible vocals. You can hear people saying "I can't hear the vocals," and Skyler saying "good, you didn't want to, trust me."

GIRLS ON DA SIDE Sumner Love

Ah, the fun continues. GirlsOnDaSide. I love these guys. Let's just call this progressive reggae for lack of a better term. You might think you are on the sandy beach of a tropical island with gorgeous girls in bikinis dancing to the beat of a calypso band, when suddenly a feirce wind picks up and dark clouds form overhead as ice cold pellets of freezing rain begin to fall, stinging the skin. Then, without warning, you are thrown into the back seat of a Nash Rambler and driven over the rolling hills of a countryside to a house, where you are tied to a chair and forced to watch a series of short films, mostly clay-mation, an episode of woody woodpecker, and a weezer video. After all that, just as the needle is dropped onto the 4th Led Zeppelin LP, you wriggle your arms free and bolt out the door, running as if pursued by a hungry cat. You run until your legs can no longer move, and then collapse face down on the sandy beach of a tropical island while two bikini girls look down at you and start to giggle.

CRUISER Green House

6-22-09. David Zeidman and Andy Weaver (Everybody etc.) load in to a dank basement, and squeeze their equipment into a corner. the headlining act wanted to cut to the quick, so they played before Cruiser and Why I Must Be Careful, and not only played an epic 45 minute set, but continued to engage in an ongoing free jam. you can hear them in the recording as Dave and Andy launch into their set. it is not long until they achieve absolute command of the party. Dave dropped a stick in one song, or maybe two, but they way he plays it off makes it all the more amazing. let's see.

AS/SS Salad House

a very short set from Asss. two floor toms, a cymbal, some pedals and microphones seem to be their entire setup. wild, tribal beats and chanting over the top of an ocean of sludgy ambience. i don't know these guys very well at all, but i am certainly down with their shit. Alex Smith & Sean Sumler are their names and they have rad merch on their myspace.
